Iba, Zambales
"4x4 up...
MTB down..."
Cast:
+ fry
+ kublador
+ the offroaders
By bus or by car, the trail head/jump-off is ~200 kilometers from Manila, so that's 4-6 hours of travel. Also known as the "high peak", it is the highest mountain in Zambales and in Central Luzon. Tapulao means "pine tree" in the local dialect.
Our first attempt to ride down this tough mountain as we usually hike it instead (9-12 hours hike up; 6-8 hours down). One good thing is water will not be a problem as there are a few sources. The temperature at the base camp / bunker goes as low as 10 deg C. Hardtails might really have a hard time here as the trails have huge and rough rocks along the way. We have the bikes loaded at the back seats (but there are no seats hehe!) of the Vitara as we go up with its 38" super swampers. It's raining a bit and the trails are a bit wet / rocks are slippery and so some trucks are having a hard time ascending. It looks like we're stopping at the 75% mark, the trucks cannot make it anymore and NO we're not willing to push/ride the bikes all the way to the top as it's still quite far (3-5 kms). I guess this is fine, let's go and start the ~10 kilometer adrenaline downhill. So let the radness begin.
